Some liver function indicators in guinea pigs injected with cyanide

چکیده
To determine the lethal effect of cyanide poisoning on the liver cells using ALP, AST, ALT and Bilirubin (Total and Conjugated) as test indicators, eighteen (18) male guinea pigs, age matched were used for this study. This included 12 guinea pigs which served as test groups and injected with different concentrations of potassium cyanide saline solution while 6 guinea pigs without cyanide injection served as control group. Blood samples were collected from the guinea pigs three hours after the injections of the cyanide saline solution. The blood samples were analysed for liver enzymes and bilirubin using standard methods. The result of the plasma AST and ALT at the different concentrations showed decreased levels which were significant when compared with the controls. The plasma levels of Total and Conjugated bilirubin were also significantly decreased when compared with controls. However, the levels of the ALP in both test and control groups showed no significant difference. This study therefore highlighted the need to determine the levels of these liver function indicators in cases of cyanide poisoning to ensure efficient management of patients who are exposed to the cyanide. © 2013 Sjournals. A comparison of virulence of intraperitoneal infection of Burkholderia mallei strains in guinea-pigs
Male guinea pigs show high susceptibility to Burkholderia mallei and have been used as animal models in glanders studies. The purpose of our study was to elucidate glanders comparative pathogenesis in guinea pigs. We present here the histological changes and bacterial isolation that develop over time in guinea pigs inoculated intraperitoneally (IP) with two strain of B. mallei. Ten male guinea ...

We hypothesize that selected combinations of nutrients commonly encountered in the human diet, suppress asthma-associated airway inflammation more effectively than currently available anti-inflammatory medications. Here we demonstrate that biflavones and terpenes, distributed widely in human diet (in this case derived from Ginkgo biloba) synergize with the carotenoid antioxidant astaxanthin and...
متن کاملContents of erythorbic acid in the tissues of guinea pigs intraperitoneally administered erythorbic acid.
The contents of ascorbic acid (AsA) and erythrobic acid (ErA) in the tissues of guinea pigs intraperitoneally injected with AsA and/or ErA were determined to learn the difference in their retention in the tissues. After 10 d of AsA depletion, the guinea pigs were intraperitoneally injected with 5 mg of AsA, or 5 mg of ErA, or 5 mg of each. At day 5 of repletion, the guinea pigs were killed and ...

متن کاملAlterations of triglyceride and cholesterol in response to Aloe vera gel extract in HepG2 cells and hyperlipidemic guinea pigs
Aloe vera is well-known for its pharmacological and nutritional properties. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of A. vera gel extracts on the secretion and cell content of triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (TC) in HepG2 cells and their short-term effects on the dietary hyperlipidemic guinea pig model. The effects of increasing concentrations of A. vera crude gel and its al...
